Third Year and Growing!

This is the third year of the 5th Quarter Football Club. The Club was started by Alumni football players because of the perceived need on the part of many in the Cal Lutheran community to have a real “boosters club”. Although we have a University President in Chris Kimball who believes that athletics should be offered as an option in a true liberal arts education, he had not been able to find a consensus withinin the athletic faculty regarding the structure of such a group…and so the 5th Quarter was formed as an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to a mission of “engaging all former players, general alumni and the Cal Lutheran Community at large in a life-long connection of support for California Lutheran University and its football program.
We are, all of us, first of all, Kingsmen and want all of Cal Lutheran’s sports to succeed and for all of us to support the total effort to keep friendships alive and for “our University” to thrive in what it stands for and what if offers.
In January, the University hired a Special Assistant to the President for Athletic Affairs, Jim McHugh. He is to bring the overall sports faculty and the overall Cal Lutheran community together to support a new overall boosters effort for all Cal Lutheran sports. We are all excited to see this happen.
What does this mean for the 5th Quarter? Will we now dissolve or be absorbed into the University’s
more institutional model?
No, because we are independent, legally, and we can operate as an independent organization that can develop support through activities that are not so confining as those under which universities must operate today. We will do this in cooperation with Cal Lutheran in supporting its image and game plan to offer superior educational and life experiences.
