When we are young we are less aware that not everything lasts. Our lives get caught up in gathering and acquiring, throwing things out half used and then buying more because we know that there will always be more.
But then your parents die…and some of your close friends that you’ve known for a lifetime…and you are struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn’t any more.
Sometimes what we care about most gets all used up and goes away…never to return…so while we have it…it’s best we love it…and care for it…and fix it when it’s broken…and heal it when it’s sick.
This is true for old cars…and children with bad report cards…and dogs with bad hips…and our parents. We keep them and take care of them because they are worth it, because we are worth it.
Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a teammate that was like a brother when you played together…way back when.
These are the things that give our lives meaning and enjoyment…things we seem to realize the most as we age… |
